Why Adding Olive Oil To Your Dog's Food Is A Great Idea....

In today's post, I just wanted to share with you some of the benefits of adding olive oil to your dog's diet.
  • Coat condition - olive oil imparts moisture and can help condition your dog's coat.
  • Immune system boosting - olive oil contains high levels of antioxidants which help a dog's immune system to fight off diseases.
  • Helps keep your dog younger longer - the high level of antioxidants in olive oil also helps to prevent free radical cell oxidation, which goes some way to protecting a dog against premature aging.
  • Optimal canine health - olive oil is rich in monounsaturated (good) fats which help to prevent or lessen the effects of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in dogs. In addition to this, olive oil also contains squalene and terpenoids, 2 compounds that are believed to be effective in preventing cancer which sadly kills over half of our senior canine friends.
Which olive oil should I buy?
Purchase the extra -virgin olive oil.

Where can I purchase it?
Most large supermarkets sell extra-virgin olive oil. If like myself, you live in the UK Aldi sell a great quality one at the best price that I have seen.

How much and how often should I add it to my dog's food?
A few drops up to a teaspoon (note a teaspoon not a tablespoon) a day, this is under the dose that I have seen recommended but allows, as with any dietary supplement for dogs, for the potential of diarroeah in extremely sensitive dogs at a higher dose than this.

Is olive oil safe for dogs?
Yes it is and it has many of the same health benefits for humans too.
